About
About Troy Index
The price of an ounce, dealer by dealer.
What this is
Troy Index reads the prices dealers publish for physical gold and silver, works out what each one charges over the spot price of the metal, and ranks them. Every figure carries the time we last confirmed it. The conditions that make a price less useful than it looks, such as a limit of one per customer or a wire-only discount, are called out on the offer instead of hidden in the ranking.
The name
Precious metals are weighed in troy ounces, a unit older than the dollar and the reason a spot quote means 31.1 grams when it says an ounce. It is the “t” in “ozt” on every bar, and it is the unit behind every price on this site. An index is a published series of measurements. Put together, the name says what we do: measure what a troy ounce costs, and publish it.
What we do not do
We do not buy, sell, hold or ship metal, and we take no orders. We do not say whether gold is cheap or silver is going up, and nothing here is investment advice. We report asks, never appraisals: a premium is a price a dealer is asking today, not a statement of what a piece is worth.
How the ranking works
Tables are ordered by price and premium arithmetic and by nothing else. Some dealer links are affiliate links, and a click may earn us a commission. That cannot move an offer up a table, keep one in, or change which conditions it carries, because the ranking is computed before any link is built. Dealers without an affiliate program are listed the same way as dealers with one.
What we keep
Your watchlist and your delivery state live in your browser and are never sent to us. There are no accounts yet. When there are, the rule stays: the least we can ask for, and nothing we hold is ever sold or used for advertising.
How we read dealer sites
Our crawler announces itself as TroyIndexBot, reads each site’s robots.txt as policy, and paces its requests. How it behaves and how to keep it off a site are on the crawler page.
